Charles D. Scales, Jr., MD, is Associate Dean for Clinical Research Initiatives and Associate Professor of Urology and Population Health Science at Duke University School of Medicine. He completed medical school and urology residency training at Duke. Dr. Scales studies the epidemiology of urinary stone disease as well as quality and value of care. His work has reshaped national understanding of stone disease, compared the effectiveness of leading stone-removal technologies, and identified strategies to reduce unplanned care after procedures. He leads a diverse health services and clinical research program at the Duke Clinical Research Institute and serves as Principal Investigator for the coordinating center of the NIH-funded Urinary Stone Disease Research Network (USDRN). Within the USDRN, he is lead PI for the multicenter Prevention of Urinary Stones with Hydration (PUSH) randomized clinical trial and the Study to Enhance Understanding of Stent-Associated Symptoms (STENTS) cohort study.
